Old time mechanical slot machines were clockwork - literally. When you pulled the handle, you twisted a cam bar against a powerful spring and pulled up a spring loaded hook. The cam withdrew the reel stops. Then at the end of stroke the hook fell off another cam and caught toothed plates that spun the reels.
